Why Ingredient Labels Aren't Always What They Seem

Halal isn't just about pork and alcohol. Food manufacturing relies on hundreds of additives, and many of them can come from either plant, synthetic, or animal sources — with the label giving no clue which one was used. Here are five categories worth a second look every time you shop.

Gelatin: Gelatin appears in gummy candy, marshmallows, yogurt, and even some capsules and vitamins. It's most commonly derived from pork or beef bone and skin, and unless the source animal was halal-slaughtered, it isn't permissible. Look for "gelatin" with no qualifier as a red flag, and prefer products that explicitly state "beef gelatin (halal)" or use plant-based alternatives like agar-agar or pectin.
Emulsifiers (E471, Mono- and Diglycerides): These keep fats and water from separating in bread, margarine, and ice cream. E471 and similar emulsifiers can be sourced from either vegetable oil or animal fat — the ingredient list alone won't tell you which. This is one of the most common reasons a seemingly simple product needs manufacturer verification.
Alcohol-Based Flavorings and Extracts: Vanilla extract, some artificial flavorings, and a handful of sauces use alcohol as a carrier or preservative. The amount is usually small, but scholarly opinions differ on trace alcohol used purely as a processing aid versus alcohol added for flavor or effect. When in doubt, look for "alcohol-free" extracts or flavorings.
Enzymes (Rennet and L-Cysteine): Rennet is used to set cheese, and L-cysteine is used as a dough conditioner in some breads and bagels. Both can be produced from animal or microbial/plant sources. Animal rennet from a non-halal-slaughtered source makes the cheese impermissible, and L-cysteine has historically been sourced from animal hair or feathers, though microbial and synthetic versions are now common.
Cochineal / Carmine (E120): This natural red food coloring is derived from crushed cochineal insects, used in everything from fruit juices to red velvet products to some cosmetics. Its permissibility is debated among scholars, and many halal-certified brands avoid it entirely in favor of beet-based or synthetic red dyes.
